Even with her accomplished career, Glenn Close says she’s not accustomed to giving younger actors advice.
“I don’t get asked for advice much because I’m not around much,” she tells EW. “I don’t, like, hang. When I’m not working, I’m kind of invisible.”
Invisibility and work are both themes that dominate The Wife, as the actress disappears into the role of Joan Castleman, the supportive spouse of novelist Joe (Jonathan Pryce), who is about to collect a Nobel Prize in Literature. And when it comes to awards of a different kind — the Academy Awards — Close has been here before: Her nomination for The Wife is her seventh nod in more than 30 years.
Close previously spoke to EW about her role and opened up about the struggles to get the film to the big screen — studios considered it a long shot because of its title, and it was hard to find an actor willing to play opposite such a formidable female lead — but, in light of its success, she hopes it marks a moment of change for the industry.
“Now that it was made based on a novel written by a woman, a screenplay by a woman, and we have a woman composer and a woman editor,” she said. “So it represents where I hope we’re going and that there’ll be more productions with equality like that.”
On the morning of the big announcement, Close was in Montana but told EW: “Everything to do with this movie has been a total joy. Bjorn Runge is a great director! Jonathan Pryce is an inspired partner. I’m so proud to be in a little film that has such great resonance with so many people. I’m especially proud to have shared the creation of this character with my beloved daughter Annie. So grateful!”
