President Donald Trump delivered his second State of the Union address Tuesday night, offering up the yearly presidential speech on a delayed timeline.
The address was postponed after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refused to invite Trump to the Capitol in the midst of the government shutdown, stressing that it would not be appropriate under the circumstances.
There was much speculation as to what the president’s speech might cover. Many wondered if he might use the moment to declare executive action on his proposed border wall (a major sticking point in the government shutdown) or announce a new summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un continuing his controversial efforts to smooth that relationship. While Trump did confirm a second summit with the dictator in Vietnam, the speech was light on major announcements.
Instead, the address was met with the usual blend of disdain, sarcasm, and outright anger that most of Trump’s speeches and decisions provoke on the internet. Twitter users couldn’t resist commenting on the president’s crooked red tie and sharing reaction GIFs of the Democratic members of the House, who bit their collective lips and rolled their eyes throughout the hour-plus long speech. Check out some of the best tweets from celebs, journalists, and more below.
Trump drew disdain from many Democrats while calling for legislation that would ban late-term abortions, even in cases where a mother’s life could be at risk.
While the president brought up acts of gun violence during his speech, he did not make any calls for gun safety reform. Parkland survivor Emma González noted the omission.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who sat behind Trump for the speech, was also heavily memed.
Trump also seemed to take a shot at special council Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, saying, “If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation.” Some noticed the rhyme scheme seemed familiar…
One of the more memorable moments of the night came when the president took credit for an increase of women in the workforce. A host of newly sworn-in Democratic congresswomen appreciated the irony and cheered loudly.
