This much seems clear after Saturday’s Directors Guild of America Awards: Alfonso Cuarón is the filmmaker to beat in the Oscar race for Best Director. The man behind the lush black-and-white drama Roma won the top film prize at the DGA ceremony over the weekend, adding to an awards season haul that also includes directing honors from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and New York Film Critics Circle Awards.
But what else do the results of this year’s DGA Awards tell us about the potential fortunes of Roma — which is up for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture — and its competition, which includes Peter Farrelly’s Green Book, Adam McKay’s Vice, Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, and more?
Here to analyze the current state of the Oscar contest is a new episode of EW’s The Awardist podcast, hosted by EW digital director Shana Naomi Krochmal. This week Shana is joined by EW writer Joey Nolfi to discuss the DGA Awards; to check in on who will be performing their Oscar-nominated songs at this year’s ceremony; and to take a look at some below-the-line Oscar categories, including cinematography and film editing.
Also in this week’s episode, Joey chats with the Oscar-nominated costume designers Ruth Carter, of Black Panther, and Sandy Powell, of The Favourite and Mary Poppins Returns, about how they brought those films to life through wardrobe and where they found inspiration for their creations.
Carter, for example, reflects on her approach to the world of Wakanda. “I thought that I could marry tradition with the future, and there were so many things that seamlessly kind of went together when you looked at some of the traditional African dress,” she says. “Then also, we married a few technologically advanced techniques and styles that were even new to us today, like 3-D printing. That’s something that we haven’t really ventured into as far as wearable art, and it was one thing I really wanted to put into Wakanda because it was fresh and new.”
The Awardist podcast is part of EW’s comprehensive awards coverage, online and in the magazine. And of course, it wouldn’t be awards season without some bold predictions.
