It’s a good thing no one had the puck during the ceremonial face-off.
Before the Toronto Maple Leafs game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday, the team honored Corporal Jeremy Hillson of the 3rd Royal Canadian Regiment.
As far as his family, wife Jen and children Mason and Dakota knew, he was still deployed in Iraq.
But when no one had a puck to drop between Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly, Corporal Hillson surprised everyone in the building by walking out to center ice.
The scene left not only fans in attendance, but Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock in tears.
Hillson and his daughter did the honors together and left the ice to applause and fist bumps from the Maple Leafs bench.
