Stars score four in third, defeat Coyotes for fifth straight win

DALLAS — The Dallas Stars scored four goals in the third period to get their fifth consecutive win, 5-4 against the Arizona Coyotes at American Airlines Center on Monday.

Tyler Seguin scored off a Jamie Benn pass from below the goal line to give Dallas a 5-4 lead with 7:32 remaining after Arizona scored two straight goals in 1:01 to tie the game.

Roope Hintz, John Klingberg, Radek Faksa and Mattias Janmark scored for the Stars (28-21-4), who had not won five in a row since Feb. 1-9, 2018. Benn and Miro Heiskanen each had two assists, and Ben Bishop made 38 saves.

“It’s believing in the system, getting confidence and going into third periods finding ways to win hockey games in all kinds of different ways,” Benn said.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Kevin Connauton, Vinnie Hinostroza and Alex Galchenyuk scored for the Coyotes (23-24-5), who have lost three straight games. Clayton Keller and Nick Cousins each had two assists, and Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves.

“We worked hard and competed and did our best to give ourselves a chance to win the game,” Arizona forward Lawson Crouse said. “But at the end of the day, they got that clutch goal there at the end that determined the outcome.”

Ekman-Larsson gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead at 8:39 of the first period with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle, converting a cross-ice pass from Cousins on a 3-on-2 rush.

It was Ekman-Larsson’s 109th NHL goal, passing Teppo Numminen for most in Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets history.

“You’d rather win the hockey game than breaking records,” Ekman-Larsson said. “It means a lot to me, that I’ve been able to score a lot of goals for this organization, and hopefully I have a lot more in me.”

Hintz tied the game 1-1 at 3:36 of the second when he redirected a slap pass from Jason Spezza on the power play. It was the third goal of the season for Hintz, who had a 20-game goal drought in the NHL dating to Nov. 21 and missed 10 other games while playing for Texas of the American Hockey League.

Connauton gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead when he scored his first of the season at 9:54 on a shot from the left point that went off Stars defenseman Roman Polak‘s stick. It was his first goal since April 3, ending a 38-game drought.

Dallas scored three straight goals in 71 seconds early in the third period, the first two on the power play.

Klingberg tied it 2-2 at 2:28 with a wrist shot from the point that went off Richard Panik‘s leg on a 4-on-3 advantage, and Faksa scored at 3:04 to give the Stars a 3-2 lead. Janmark made it 4-2 at 3:39 with his second goal in as many games.

Nine Stars had a point on the three goals, marking the first time in Dallas/Minnesota North Stars history that nine players had a point in 1:11.

Hinostroza scored his fourth goal in five games at 6:49 to pull the Coyotes to within 4-3, and Galchenyuk tied it 4-4 at 7:50.

After Stars forward Blake Comeau was penalized for tripping Cousins at 17:34 of the third period, Arizona pulled Kuemper at 17:48 for the extra skater for the rest of the game and had three shots on goal, with Dallas blocking six more.

Coyotes defenseman Alex Goligoski left the game at 17:40 of the second period after he was hit by Stars forward Brett Ritchie, who received a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct.

Coach Rick Tocchet said Goligoski failed the concussion test.

“He was a little wobbly,” Tocchet said.

Arizona’s five-minute power play ended when Ekman-Larsson was called for hooking Janmark 52 seconds into the third. Dallas started the 4-on-3 Klingberg scored on when Niklas Hjalmarsson was called for delay of game at 1:52.

The Coyotes went 0-for-5 on the power play.

Dallas was 3-for-4 against Arizona, which leads the NHL on the penalty kill (85.4 percent).
