Scheifele has two goals, assist in Jets victory against Rangers

WINNIPEG — Mark Scheifele had two goals and an assist, and Connor Hellebuyck made 34 saves to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the New York Rangers 4-3 at Bell MTS Place on Tuesday.

Joe Morrow scored his first of the season and had an assist for the Jets (36-18-3), who are 12-0-0 when tied after two periods and 8-0-1 in their past nine home games.

“I’m feeling good, playing with two unbelievable players, so I’m pretty lucky,” Scheifele said in reference to linemates Blake Wheeler and Kyle Connor. “On any given night we try to do everything for each other. That one guy gets rewarded. If it’s a guy driving the net or taking a hit or blocking a shot or having a good stick, that’s what we do for each other all over the ice. I was lucky tonight to get two.”

Andrew Copp gave the Jets a 4-3 lead 7:21 into the third period, 1:59 after Morrow tied it 3-3 at 5:22.

“I was just trying to be in the right spot [in case] that puck did bounce out or if there was a rebound or something,” Copp said. “I was just trying to get in that guy’s blind spot that was covering me, and I was able to kind of get past him. [Jets forward Mason Appleton] started making a play to the net and I was fortunate to put it in.”

Mika Zibanejad scored twice, and Mats Zuccarello had two assists for the Rangers (24-24-8). Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves.

“I thought we dug ourselves a hole in the first, but I thought we battled the last two periods,” Zibanejad said.

Scheifele scored his 29th at 4:58 of the first period when his wrist shot beat Lundqvist through the five-hole after a cross-ice pass from Morrow to make it 1-0.

Scheifele pushed the lead to 2-0 at 18:36 with a wrist shot high on the blocker side after cutting into the slot.

“I feel like, even myself, I battle in this game to try to make the right things and get rewarded, but the result is the same,” Lundqvist said. “And it’s very disappointing for us as a group, but even for me personally.”

Zibanejad scored 38 seconds into the second period to pull the Rangers within 2-1.

Pavel Buchnevich tied it 2-2 on the power play at 19:19, redirecting Ryan Strome‘s point shot for his 10th goal.

Zibanejad’s wrist shot went off the leg of Jacob Trouba and the stick of Josh Morrissey for a power-play goal to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead 57 seconds into the third period. It was his 13th goal in his past 11 games.

“To get the lead against that team in their home building, we have to expect them to make a hard push,” Rangers defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. “There’s just a couple plays there that we probably want back. I thought we fought right until the end, but it’s a tough one to let slip away.”

They said it

“Really disappointing because I thought for 40 minutes we played really well and hard. We dug ourselves that hole in the first period where we were flat and didn’t have a lot going on. But I think it’s a good sign we battled back. We turned the switch on, which isn’t easy to do when you play that poorly in the first to come out the way we did in the second and third.” — Rangers coach David Quinn

“He’s not stopping. He’s obviously having a fantastic year, he puts in the work on the ice, off the ice. He’s as dialed in as it gets. It ain’t stopping now, so buckle up.” — Jets forward Andrew Copp on Mark Scheifele‘s 30th goal
