Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night is going to have a last-minute unexpected guest: Manuel Oliver, the father of a Parkland shooting victim.
According to The Washington Post, Oliver is going to the speech in D.C. as the guest of Democratic Congressman Ted Deutch.
Oliver recently made headlines by doing a devastating “stand-up routine” slamming Louis C.K. for mocking Parkland survivors last December in a leaked comedy club set.
Oliver also tweeted that gun violence is “the real national emergency” facing America, a reference to Trump’s fixation on erecting a U.S.-Mexico border wall and threat to declare a state of emergency in order to bypass congressional approval for funds.
In addition, the Post notes, two other Parkland parents will also be at the SOTU.
“You guys ever heard dead baby jokes?” Oliver said in his “set” that served as a reply to C.K.’s jokes. “I got a dead baby. His name was Joaquin Oliver. He’s going to be 18, but now he’s dead. And that’s not a joke.” Then Oliver walked away.
C.K. previously mocked Parkland students in leaked audio, then reportedly re-addressed the matter in January: “If you ever need people to forget that you jerked off, what you do is you make a joke about kids getting shot,” he reportedly said, then added, “The whole point of comedy is to say things that you shouldn’t say. That’s the entire point.”
Oliver has disagreed, noting, “I think you don’t need to be a bullying guy and hurt people in order to be funny. I also know that his comments were very painful to a lot of youths that are trying to do the right thing for the future of the nation. As a father, I need to protect my son no matter what. Anybody who fools around with the memory of my son, I will stand up against anyone. I don’t care. It’s not a funny thing.”
The State of the Union address airs tonight.
