Mahershala Ali and John David Washington are preparing for a golden weekend with their Oscar-nominated films, but they’ve luckily got some powerful playlists to get them ready.
EW can exclusively reveal special Black History Month-inspired playlists from Green Book‘s Ali, BlacKkKlansman‘s Washington, and black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross that will be available Friday on Apple Music. The three stars are the latest celebrity curators for the streaming service’s February celebration, joining Ava DuVernay, Lena Waithe, and others.

“One of the gifts in acting is that I’m required to embrace the lives of other men,” says Ali, having comprised songs that have helped him understand his characters. “It’s always a black man challenging me to tell his story with empathy absent of judgment.” He adds, “These songs have inspired qualities in several characters during my exploration of the diverse and beautifully complex black identity.”
Declares Ross, “This is my Tracee-ISH List: some old stuff, some new stuff…sultry, soulful, and filled with love.”
“Music serves as a mechanism that initiates the purest sense of self and self-discovery and experiences of escapism,” says Washington. “I can download so much spirituality and energy when I submit, when I forfeit my human need to comprehend God’s plan for everything.”
