Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames and Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche each scored his 30th goal of the season Wednesday, bringing the number of 30-goal scorers in 2018-19 to 16 through 928 games played. That’s the most at this stage of a season in 20 years; there were 18 at this point during the 1998-99 season.
Gaudreau scored No. 30, a power-play goal at 6:39 of the third period, in the Flames’ 4-2 win against the New York Islanders at Scotiabank Saddledome. The forward also moved within one point of his second straight 80-point season; he had an NHL career-high 84 points (24 goals, 60 assists) in 2017-18. He is set to become the second Flames player since 1994-95 to have consecutive 80-point seasons, a feat achieved by Jarome Iginla (2006-07 to 2008-09) during that span.
The Flames (37-16-7) lead the Western Conference by three points over the San Jose Sharks (35-17-8) and are on track for the fifth 100-point season in Calgary/Atlanta Flames history, and first since 2005-06.

MacKinnon’s 30th goal was the first of five in the third period for the Avalanche in a 7-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Pepsi Center. The sixth-year center scored an NHL career high 39 goals last season.
The Avalanche (25-24-11) hold the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference, the first time they’ve been in a playoff spot since Feb. 1. Colorado scored seven goals for the third time this season.
Kane extends streak, gives Blackhawks OT win
Patrick Kane scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to extend his road and overall point streaks to 18 and 19 games, respectively, for the Chicago Blackhawks in a 5-4 victory against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.
The 30-year-old forward extended his streaks when he scored 1:17 into the second period to give Chicago a 4-1 lead. After Detroit forced overtime by scoring three goals in the third, Kane scored his 38th of the season at 2:42 of OT for the win.
Kane owns the two longest point streaks by a United States-born player in NHL history. He had points in 26 consecutive games in 2015-16 (40 points; 16 goals, 24 assists), the last time any NHL player had at least one point in more than 19 consecutive games.
He also has at least one point in each of Chicago’s past 18 road games, surpassing Sharks forward Joe Thornton (17 games in 2009-10) for the longest such streak by any active player. Six players in NHL history have had longer road point streaks: Wayne Gretzky (five), Peter Stastny, Pat LaFontaine, Mario Lemieux, Jean Ratelle and Marcel Dionne. Gretzky tops that list with a 29-game run for the Edmonton Oilers in 1986-87 (65 points; 24 goals, 41 assists).
Kane leads the NHL with 42 points (16 goals, 26 assists) in 2019 and has been held off the scoresheet once in 20 games since the calendar turned. Five players have had 42 or more points during any 20-game span within a season since 1995-96: Kane and Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning this season, Lemieux (2002-03, 1996-97, 1995-96) and Jaromir Jagr (1998-99, 1996-97, 1995-96) with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Peter Forsberg (1995-96) with the Avalanche.
Chicago (26-26-9) is even in points with Colorado for the second wild card from the West. They play at United Center on Friday (ESPN+, SN1, SNE, SNO, SNP, TVAS, NBCSCH, ALT2, NHL.TV) and have a home-and-home set March 23-24.

Bruins stay perfect on trip, win seventh straight
David Backes scored in the sixth round of the shootout to give the Boston Bruins their seventh consecutive victory, 3-2 against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena. Boston is 4-0-0 on a five-game trip that ends Saturday against the St. Louis Blues, who take an 11-game winning streak into their game at the Dallas Stars on Thursday (8:30 p.m. ET; FS-SW, FS-MW, NHL.TV).
The seven-game streak is Boston’s longest since it went 12-0-0 from March 2-22, 2014. The Bruins have had six winning streaks of at least 10 games since entering the NHL in 1924. Their longest was 14 games in 1929-30.
The Bruins (9-0-1), Blues (10-0-0) and Lightning (9-0-2) have not lost in regulation this month. Boston has points in 12 consecutive games (9-0-3) since a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Jan. 19.
