Ariana Grande hits back at Grammys producer, explains why she won’t be performing

The Grammys just lost one of pop music’s biggest stars. Though this year’s edition of the annual music awards show has featured Ariana Grande prominently in their marketing, the star will not even be attending the ceremony, much less performing. In a series of tweets, the singer explained her decision.

Rumors had been circulating this week that Grande wouldn’t perform, despite the fact that her new album Thank U, Next comes out two days before the ceremony. The star stayed silent about those rumors, until she saw a new Associated Press interview with Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich. In the interview, Ehrlich explained Grande’s absence from the program by saying “she felt it was too late for her to pull something together for sure.”

Grande refused to take this lying down.

“I’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me. I can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken,” Grande wrote on Twitter Thursday. “It was when my creativity [and] self-expression was stifled by you, that I decided not to attend. I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.”

A Variety report from earlier this week said that Grammys producers refused her request to perform her latest single “7 Rings” and wanted her to perform a song of their choosing. In the tweets, Grande said she offered three different songs, and eventually got tired of the politics involved.

Though she is nominated for only two awards this year (Best Pop Solo Performance for “God Is a Woman” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Sweetener), Grande’s recent music has broken records and dominated pop culture in recent months. Thank U, Next drops this Friday, just six months after Sweetener.

Representatives for the Grammys did not respond to EW’s request for comment.

The 61st annual Grammy Awards will take place Feb. 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., starting at 5 p.m. PST. See here for a list of insider predictions on who might walk away with the top honors.
