Alfonso Cuarón continued his awards season victory lap on Saturday night when his film Roma received the top honor at the Directors Guild Awards.
The production took home the coveted Best Feature Film prize during the Los Angeles ceremony, further positioning the Mexican visionary on the path to Oscar glory.
The filmmaker was nominated alongside Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Peter Farrelly (Green Book), Adam McKay (Vice), and Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) and was presented with the award by The Shape of Water helmer Guillermo del Toro.
While taking the stage, the 57-year-old praised the film’s stars Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira.
“Roma simply doesn’t exist without the generosity of spirit and effortless grace of Yalitza and Marina,” he said. “They somehow, with the rest of my beautiful cast, managed to bring to life this film from my memory.”
The acclaimed Netflix drama is currently up for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Foreign Language Film – while Aparicio and Tavira are nominated in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories respectively.
Cuarón’s win comes following several notable accolades this year – including Golden Globe Awards for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film.
Last night’s event also saw Eighth Grade director Bo Burnham walk away with First-Time Feature Film Director while Ben Stiller triumphed in the small screen category with Escape at Dannemora earning Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television and Miniseries.
