Virgin Australia, which finished second inn OAG’s rankings, questioned the validity of the report. A spokeswoman for the airline said Virgin Australia relied on figures from the Bureau of Transport, Infrastructure and Regional Economics to measure its on-time performance.
In the latest BITRE data – from November – Virgin Australia outperformed Qantas with an on-time percentage of 77 to its rival’s 76 per cent.
Though, when the monthly BITRE data is averaged out across 2018, Qantas’ 83 per cent still beat Virgin Australia’s 81 per cent.
Cairns airport in world top 10
OAG found Air New Zealand to be the third most punctual airline in Australia and New Zealand for 2018. Jetstar Airways placed fourth, and Tigerair Australia was identified as the worst performer with less than 70 per cent of its flights landing or leaving on time.
“We know how important it is for customers to get to their destination on time, and we’re constantly working hard behind the scenes to ensure our flights consistently arrive on schedule,” a Jetstar spokeswoman said.
Meanwhile, Cairns was judged to be the most punctual airport across the Tasman and ninth in the world for airports with fewer than 5 million people departing a year.
Adelaide and Perth were in the world top 20 airports for those with 5 million to 10 million people departing a year; Brisbane did the same for airports between 10 million and 20 million; Sydney and Melbourne ranked 17th and 18th respectively for airports with 20 million to 30 million departing passengers a year.
