MONTREAL — Elias Pettersson left with an apparent leg injury in the second period of the Vancouver Canucks game against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Thursday.
The 20-year-old forward was face down on the ice after he fell awkwardly when his legs got tangled with Montreal forward Jesperi Kotkamieni at 5:44 of the period. Pettersson went to the locker room and the Canucks said he will not return because of a lower-body injury.
Named to the NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, Pettersson leads rookies with 42 points (22 goals, 20 assists) in 38 games. He was NHL Rookie of the Month in October and December.
Pettersson broke a Canucks record held by Pavel Bure with his seventh game-winning goal this season, completing his first hat trick in a 4-3 overtime win at the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.
