The first round of 2019 NBA All-Star voting results has been tallied, with LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks setting the pace.
Per an official release from NBA.com, James leads all players with 1,083,363 votes. Antetokounmpo is a distant second after being named on 991,561 ballots, followed by Kyrie Irving of the Boston Celtics (910,329 votes), Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors (793,111) and Kawhi Leonard of the Toronto Raptors (774,172).
Among the notable players outside the top five in the overall voting is the resurgence of Derrick Rose, rise of Dallas Mavericks rookie Luka Doncic and lack of love for reigning NBA MVP James Harden.
Thanks to a surprise bounce-back season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rose ranks second among all Western Conference guards with 698,086 votes. The 30-year-old last appeared in an All-Star Game in 2012.
Rose’s unexpected jump has led to Harden, who leads the NBA with 33.3 points per game and has scored at least 41 points in each of his past four games, checking in at third in the Western Conference backcourt race with 541,606 votes.
Doncic’s 679,839 votes put him above Kevin Durant (659,968), Anthony Davis (605,417) and Paul George (580,055) in the Western Conference frontcourt race. The Mavs star leads all rookies with 19.5 points per game, ranks second with five assists per game and fifth with a 37.6 three-point percentage.
There aren’t as many surprises in the Eastern Conference. Dwyane Wade’s farewell season has him a distant second to Irving among guards with 409,156 votes.
Despite leading the Indiana Pacers to a 25-12 record, Victor Oladipo is struggling to gain traction. His 198,009 votes put him behind Irving, Wade, Kemba Walker and Ben Simmons.
Even though Jimmy Butler didn’t start this season in the East, he’s fourth in the frontcourt voting (222,206) behind Antetokounmpo, Leonard and his Philadelphia 76ers teammate Joel Embiid.
Fans can continue to vote through Jan. 21. Starters will be announced on Jan. 24, followed by reserves on Jan. 31.
The format will be the same as it was last year, with the leading vote-getters captaining each team and a draft being held on a date to be determined after the full rosters are announced.
This year’s All-Star Game will be held on Feb. 17 at Spectrum Center, home of the Charlotte Hornets.
