Mr Shorten, a powerbroker in the right faction, played a pivotal role in removing Mr Rudd for Ms Gillard in 2010. Three years later, he switched sides and backed Mr Rudd’s comeback in order to save the party from a heavy election defeat.
Consequently, his relations with both are awkward.
“This conference is all about showing we are united and ready to govern again,” said a party source.
Mr Shorten speaks with Mr Keating from time to time, usually about the economy and what he calls the Australian identity.
With a federal election due by May, Labor has been on its best behaviour at the triennial national conference, with deals done in advance to ensure the leader is not rolled on any key policy areas such as asylum seekers.
