Kapanen’s second goal helps Maple Leafs rally past Red Wings in OT

TORONTO — Kasperi Kapanen scored 1:53 into overtime after John Tavares tied it with eight seconds left in the third period in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 5-4 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Scotiabank Arena on Sunday.

Tavares and Morgan Rielly each had a goal and an assist, and Garret Sparks made 26 saves for the Maple Leafs (25-10-2), who have won four in a row.

Filip Hronek, Michael Rasmussen and Christoffer Ehn scored and Dylan Larkin extended his point streak to 11 games for the Red Wings (15-17-4), who are 1-4-2 in their past seven games. Jonathan Bernier made 19 saves.

Nielsen put in a rebound from the slot after Tyler Bertuzzi deflected Niklas Kronwall‘s shot to give the Red Wings a 4-3 lead at 12:03 of the third period, but Tavares tied it at 19:52 when he deflected Jake Gardiner‘s shot from the blue line.

Ehn scored his first NHL goal at 9:53 of the second period to put the Red Wings up 3-1.

The Maple Leafs cut the lead to 3-2 at 12:52 when Frederik Gauthier one-timed a pass from Lindholm in the slot. Trevor Moore also assisted on the goal for his first NHL point. The goal ended a 29-game drought for Gauthier dating back to Jan. 18 of last season.

Rielly tied it 3-3 1:08 later off a feed from Tavares, who has a five-game point streak.

The Maple Leafs took a 1-0 lead 27 seconds into the first period when Kapanen put in a rebound of Auston Matthews‘ shot.

Hronek tied it 1-1 at 3:45 when he intercepted Gardiner’s clearing pass in the slot.

Rasmussen put Detroit up 2-1 at 19:19 when he deflected Larkin’s shot at the top of the goal crease during a delayed penalty.
