Facts and Figures: Chabot continues hot start for Senators

Thomas Chabot scored 21 seconds into overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 4-3 win against the Nashville Predators at Canadian Tire Centre on Monday.

It was the 21-year-old’s 10th goal of the season. He is the third defenseman to reach the 10-goal mark this season, joining Matt Dumba of the Minnesota Wild (12) and Morgan Rielly of the Toronto Maple Leafs (10). This is the first season to have at least three defensemen reach double figures in goals through games played Dec. 17 since 2001-02, when Andy Delmore (Predators), Ed Jovanovski (Vancouver Canucks) and Sergei Gonchar (Washington Capitals) did it.

The goal also gave Chabot the lead in scoring among NHL defensemen with 36 points (10 goals, 26 assists), one more than Rielly (10 goals, 25 assists), John Carlson of the Washington Capitals (five goals, 30 assists) and Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames (six goals, 29 assists).

Rookies powering Senators

The Senators got goals from rookie forward Brady Tkachuk and defenseman Maxime Lajoie, as well as assists from rookie forwards Colin White and Drake Batherson in their win against Nashville. Not including shootout winners, rookies have scored 31 of Ottawa’s 116 goals (26.7 percent) this season, the highest percentage among all 31 NHL teams. Senators rookies have also combined for an NHL-leading 67 points (31 goals, 36 assists). The Canucks are second with 40 (18 goals, 22 assists).

Tkachuk, who made his NHL debut Oct. 8, scored his 10th goal in his 24th NHL game. That’s second among rookies behind Vancouver forward Elias Pettersson, who has 17 in 30 games played.

Tkachuk required the third-fewest games to score his first 10 NHL goals among players to debut with the Senators behind Alexei Yashin on Nov. 10, 1993 (13 games played) and Patrick Eaves on Jan. 19, 2006 (22). He also reached 10 goals faster than his father, Keith Tkachuk (31 games played) and older brother Matthew Tkachuk of the Flames (27).

Lajoie’s goal was his seventh, moving him into a tie with Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen for the most among rookie defensemen. The only rookie defensemen in Senators history to score more goals in a season are Andrej Meszaros in 2005-06 (10 in 82 games played) and Chabot in 2017-18 (nine in 63 games).

Predators’ winning streak against East ends

Nashville’s season-opening 10-game winning streak against Eastern Conference opponents ended when it lost at Ottawa.

The only team to have a longer season-opening winning streak against interconference opponents since 1974-75 was the 1977-78 Maple Leafs. Toronto started that season 12-0-0 against teams from the Clarence Campbell Conference.

Ducks stay hot on road

The Anaheim Ducks rallied from down 2-0 with four unanswered goals to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 at PPG Paints Arena. The victory was the sixth in a row on the road for the Ducks since Nov. 27. The only longer streak in the NHL this season was Nashville’s 8-0-0 run from Oct. 4-Nov. 10.

It’s the sixth time since entering the NHL in 1993 that the Ducks have won at least six consecutive road games. They can tie their record of seven, set from Nov. 28-Dec. 13, 2006, with a victory against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; MSG, PRIME, NHL.TV).

Bruins make history against Canadiens

Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves for his third shutout of the season and the Boston Bruins won their fifth consecutive game at Bell Centre by defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0.

It’s the longest regular-season road winning streak for the Bruins against Montreal; the previous mark of four straight victories was set from Jan. 11-Dec. 20, 1941. The Bruins also had their largest margin of victory in a shutout at Montreal since winning 8-0 at the Forum on Jan. 19, 1974.
