Patrik Berglund was suspended indefinitely by the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday for failure to report to the team.
The 30-year-old center missed Buffalo’s past two games with what coach Phil Housley described as an illness. Berglund has four points (two goals, two assists) and a minus-five rating in 23 games this season and hasn’t scored in his past 10 games.
Berglund is in his first season with the Sabres after playing the first 10 of his NHL career with the St. Louis Blues. He was traded to Buffalo by St. Louis with center Vladimir Sobotka, forward Tage Thompson, the Blues’ first-round pick in the 2019 or 2020 NHL Draft and St. Louis’ second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft for center Ryan O’Reilly on July 1.
Berglund, who has 326 points (170 goals, 156 assists) in 717 NHL games, is in the second year of a five-year contract with an average annual value of $3.85 million, which he signed with the Blues on Feb. 24, 2017. He was selected No. 25 by the Blues in the 2006 NHL Draft.
The Sabres (19-9-4), who are in third place in the Atlantic Division, visit the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSWA, MSG-B, NHL.TV).
