The major banks were also among the market leaders with some mild gains. Commonwealth Bank rose 1 per cent to $72.60, NAB climbed 1 per cent to $24.21, ANZ lifted 1.6 per cent to $24.72 and Westpac closed 1.2 per cent higher at $25.20.
Syrah Resources was among the market’s best performers through morning trade after it announced it achieved its first production of unpurified spherical graphic at its Battery Anode Material facility in Louisiana. In a statement to the market, managing director and CEO Shaun Verner said it was a significant milestone for the company.
“We will soon dispatch first unpurified product to commence the customer qualification process,” he said. “This achieve is an important step for Syrah to capture advantage in establishing a core ex-Asia supply chain position, as the battery manufacturing supply chain co-locates and expands outside Asia.” Its shares were up 2.9 per cent to $1.49.
The market losses were more muted on Monday. QBE Insurance was lower with a 0.2 per cent fall to $10.15 and BlueScope Steel had declined 1.9 per cent to $11.09.
